BEV Cons and Pros

The Tesla car (#1 in the table above) is the most inelegant (it evolve itself monthly via WiFi) and efficient EV in the World that is benchmark for all car makers!. The Tesla Model 3 is more affordable EV than other Tesla cars. A half million of Tesla M3 pre-ordered during 2016-2017 with $1000 deposit on tesla.com website and more than 100,000 orders have been made in Tesla Stores 03.31.16 before anybody sees the car! You can drive Tesla on any major highways, anywhere in the continental US by driving about 300 miles and charging less than an hour between drives because of widespread of Tesla Supercharges. It means only Tesla EV does not have a Range Anxiety while other EVs limited to drive locally and require planning ahead due absence of nationwide proprietary fast chargers network. Tesla M3 is capable to drive 310 miles and be recharged to 80% during approximately 50-55 minutes. Unfortunately, all EV are commuters right now except the Tesla with the superior (every 100 miles) network of fast Supercharges in the US (and the World). Moreover, you may buy the self-driving car for the price under $50k! You can send it home and save on parking while you work downtown. It parks itself you do not need to pay for valet anymore and it is less aggressive than human in parking spot dispute.

BMW i3 (#4) is 'Serial' Hybrid Vehicle or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). It is a PHEV for which California DMV issues HOV sticker! Serial Hybrid has the same efficiency as BEV because a traction motor is ONLY an electric engine while ICE produces electricity (on demand) at constant (optimal) RPM. Electric engine has an efficiency more than 90%. Parallel Hybrid (Prius or GM Volt) has twice less efficiency than BEV because ICE is traction engine too. ICE efficiency is range between 15% (heavy Hummer) and 26% (Mazda RX.. with Wankel ICE), where is ICE Thermodynamic Theoretical limit is 45%! It means ICE in future will never exceed that efficiency! An another Efficiency unit is a MPG (Mile Per Gallon), where is BEV has 100-150 MPGe versus Parallel Hybrid (Prius) has 50 MPG. There is another point why DMV does issue HOV sticker. to BMW i3 and does not issue it to BMW i8, apparently, those have the same Serial Hybrid technology. In Europe, BMW i3 has Manual "Start REX" button that makes BMW i3 and i8 similar where is REX may work entire trip. Some British drivers evidently (YouTube) has driven distance about 300 miles on a single charge and single tank on BMW i3 running the small ICE entire trip. US DOT banned the "Start REX" button and motorcycle ICE starts (on BMW i3) automatically when traction battery discharged below 20%. The ICE just charges battery after that, supporting the battery capacity between 20% and 10%. In this case power limited and BMW i3 can drive (no more 45-55 mph) indefinite distance (theoretically) by refueling small tank every 66 miles. The refueling and driving with discharged battery is NOT recommended by the manufacturer. BMW i8 can drive all trip with any highway speed vs US model of BMW i3 can drive with any highway speed (governed by 95 mph) only during a ~100 miles. The 100 miles would be a ~60 miles if BMV i3 drives 95 mph because energy spends on enormous resistance to air after 65 mph. The dramatic MPG decrease in high speed also happens with ICE car, but nobody cares because any exit has a gas station. The ban on "Start REX" button encourages US driver for a more clean drive and better fuel economy. Main Cons - the BMW i3 has tiny "bicycle" tires.

Two Asian's BEVs - Hyundai Kona-SUV (#12) and Honda Clarity joined a "traitor club" with CCS on-board fast charger! Consider: all Asian EVs have CHAdeMO charger on-board. The CCS charger has many advantages over the CHAdeMO

Renault Zoe (#5) is one of the best EV developed in France. It has 43Kw L2 3 phase fast charger, but in the table above it presented as L3. You can buy it in EU for about €15,000 with monthly payment for battery leasing. You can buy Zoe in French part of Canada and drive it (smuggle :) back home to US, ask your local DMV if you will have problem with registration and HOV decal. You may have those problems in some "not EV friendly states" and it sound: smuggling EV to the state

According the above specifications - Chevy Bolt (#2) is one of the main competitor of the Tesla, considering it as a best commuter EV because you can not drive it yet from West Coast to East Coast or some other regions of the North America

Sono Motors will offer you a contract of sale for the Sion (#11) in 2019. The agreement comes with a right of withdrawal and rescission of two weeks. The delivery will occur free of cost to Bremerhaven, Germany. For an additional charge, Automotive Solutions GmbH will deliver the Sion to the location of your preference, worldwide. The Sion has solar panels with 24% efficiency of total generation peak power of 1.2kW. That means: if you leave this BEV with empty battery and pick up it after ~3-8 (Summer) days then you can drive it about 150 miles on highway for 0$/mile! Great feature for frequent flayers, just find sunny parking spot in an airport and leave your mobile charger at home! Also the EV does not have range anxiety -- If you have a time you can make East Coast to West Coast during 40 driving hours but you need to wait for solar charging during 2330 hours total. The Sion has huge advantage over ICE car in Sahara desert or Tundra where is no gas stations!!

Audi e-tron SUV (#13) has towing capacity of 4000lb, it has 2 charging ports - it is convenient for charging the e-tron from one site or another


Finally: Cons of all EVs vs. Tesla - thus are local commuters except Tesla with World Superchargers Network. All BEVs above are not evolve each month overnight like the Tesla. Tesla does not need any card for charging because VIN recognition is build in charging protocol, just plug the Tesla in and charge. Only Tesla could be remote controlled and opened by your smart phone via standard Bluetooth. US gained back the automotive leadership and finally beat Japan and Germany!!
